Preventive Care

Dental Cleanings & Exams

Dr. Colson regards your oral health as her top priority. Because of the relationship between your mouth and your overall health, we place a strong emphasis on routine cleanings and comprehensive exams.

For patients with healthy mouths, cleanings occur every six months and digital X-rays are taken annually to catch issues early. Patients with periodontal disease may need a deep cleaning — also known as scaling and root planing — and may need a maintenance cleaning every three to four months instead of a standard cleaning. We are more than happy to tailor a plan that meets your specific needs.

Regular exams allow Dr. Heather to monitor your oral health, identify early signs of cavities, gum disease, or other concerns, and customize a care plan to keep your smile healthy for life.

Teeth Whitening

Tooth whitening is a popular procedure to make teeth whiter and brighter, and is an easy, non-invasive way to enhance your smile. We offer both in-office and take-home whitening options so you can choose the approach that best fits your lifestyle and goals.

Bleaching is not permanent. A touch-up may be needed yearly, and more often if you smoke or regularly drink coffee, tea, or wine. Dr. Heather will evaluate your teeth and recommend the whitening method most likely to achieve your desired results.

Fillings

A filling restores a broken or decayed tooth back to its normal function and shape. When Dr. Colson gives you a filling, she will first remove the decayed tooth material, clean the affected area, and then fill the cleaned-out cavity with a filling material.

By cleaning and closing off spaces where bacteria and food can enter, a filling can also help prevent further decay. Filling materials include amalgam and composite resin. The best choice depends on the extent of the repair and the location in your mouth. Dr. Heather will discuss all options with you.

Crowns (Cap)

A crown is used to completely cover a damaged tooth. A crown not only strengthens a tooth, but it can dramatically improve a tooth's appearance, shape, and alignment. Crowns may be used to replace a large filling when there isn't enough tooth remaining, to protect a weak tooth from fracturing, restore a fractured tooth, cover a dental implant, or cover a discolored or poorly shaped tooth.

A crown is also commonly used to cover a tooth that has had root canal treatment. Crowns can be made from porcelain, gold, or other metal alloys. Dr. Heather will recommend the most suitable material based on the location of the tooth and your aesthetic goals.

Bridges

A bridge is a non-removable method to fill the space created by a missing tooth. It is formed to look like the missing tooth and takes its place in your mouth. The sides of a bridge use the two surrounding teeth for support.

Bridges are available in gold, porcelain-bonded-to-metal, and ceramic materials. The material chosen will depend upon the location in the mouth, the aesthetic result desired, and your personal preference. Dr. Heather will explain all options and help you determine the best solution for your smile.

Dentures & Partials

A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. Complete dentures are used when all the teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain. Partial dentures also help keep your natural teeth from shifting out of position.

Dentures are very durable appliances and will last many years, but they may have to be remade, repaired, or readjusted due to normal wear over time. Dr. Heather will work with you to ensure your dentures fit comfortably and restore both the function and appearance of your smile.
